Abstract

Introduction: Myelomeningocele is a neural tube defect that affects 1 to 1000 newborns and has several physical and psychological sequels that impact across the lifespan of those who live with it. Objective: We aim to show the possible effects of music therapy on the psychomotor development of children who have this diagnosis based on the analysis of a theoretical case. Method: Based on a theoretical single case design, an active music therapy intervention constituted by eight sessions was applied. Measurements of eye-hand coordination and spatial relationships skills were suggested to be taken by the subtests 1 and 5 from the Developmental Test of Visual Perception DTVP-2. Effect size would be calculated by the Percentage of Non-overlapping Data and the Percentage of Data Exceeding the Median. Results: In a treatment that might be considered effective, the subtests scores would increase, reaching a performance within the average. Based on the example scores, treatment effects were among a moderate effect and effective rank. Conclusions: This research is an approach to music therapy intervention focused on the psychomotor development of children with myelomeningocele.
